Michael Fassbender - speedpainting

Michael Fassbender, speedpainting - click for a bigger size

I was asked to paint two more Michael Fassbender-paintings after the one earlier this year, and finally I have enough time to actually fill the task. I made special brushes for this one and started painting differently than before, by making the overall shape and going from “big to small”. Usually I’m stuck with details for too long and then I lose my nerves… Also, I used the black-and-white technique again and colored it later, and I’m very satisfied how this one turned out.

I call it a speedpainting although it’s more detailed and finished looking than speedpaintings usually are, but this one was quickly made. It took me around 4-5 hours.

And I also made a WIP-sheet of the painting process. It’s been over a year since my last one. Click to see it in full size.

Jason Flemyng

Another celebrity portrait, after a while. I wanted to try to use only sepia colors instead of using full colors, and I like the summerish, hot feeling I managed to achieve with this one. Poor Jason looks like he’s suffering from a heat wave.

And he was perfect in X-Men: First Class as Azazel. ♥

Gísli Örn Garðarsson

A portrait of the Icelandic actor, Gísli Örn Garðarsson. Me and my friend have been watching lots of Icelandic movies lately, and thus I wanted to paint him. His eyes are very individual, but unfortunately you can’t see it clearly from this portrait. But I really liked his pose in the screen capture which I saw, and that’s why I chose to use it as my reference.

Jesse Eisenberg - speed painting

I’m so original with titles. Anyway, a speed painting of Jesse Eisenberg because I’ve been totally obsessed with his facial features lately. And I wanted to try to paint a photorealistic portrait with the same style I make my own fashion illustrations. It was fun just to paint really fast and use strange colors - especially because the result turned out to be nice.

This took me a couple of hours. I started to paint it yesterday when I was waiting for my friend to invite me over. And finished it today in about an hour. I didn’t paint the stubble because I think it looked better that I left the skin smooth, and I wanted to use less details in this one.

Ben McKenzie

This is just a quickly made portrait of Ben McKenzie. I was watching Southland and because Ben has the cutest face!!, I wanted to paint him. I really like his eyes, he always looks like he’s really worried. Or about to cry. I find that really adorable. I also like his hairstyle nowadays, but unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to paint it.

I’m not satisfied with the background but I didn’t want to get stuck with not-finishing-it. I tried lots of color combinations and styles, but nothing seemed to fit. So I decided to leave it as it is now… maybe I’ll edit it later. Nothing more to say about it. Reference used.

Michael Fassbender

My friend is a huge fan of Michael Fassbender, so I decided to give it a go and paint him. I was going to make a Jonah Hex-fan art (he’s in it) but I liked the reference photo too much and kept him as himself. Although his tattoos in Jonah Hex (which I haven’t seen because it got bad reviews…) are very great looking. And I’m really happy with the background - it has a nice atmosphere. I never realized how well orange and violet go together…

And it seems I always end up painting men with a beard or stubble, although I hate painting beards. It’s awful because there are like four billion hairs to be painted. And I prefer to paint it without using any beard brushes, so… I guess it’s my own fault. :|

Young Sherlock Holmes

My second RDJ-fan art, and I have to say, I really love to paint him. Especially his gorgeous eyes and eyelashes - my favorite part. But this isn’t just a RDJ-fan art but also a Sherlock Holmes-fan art. I saw some older photos of RDJ and decided to give a go to painting a young Sherlock Holmes which isn’t seen in the movie.

Compared to the “older” Holmes, my young one is more stylish and little bit diva-ish, too. I’m not saying that he’s not fashionable in his older days - he totally is, just a little bit ragged. But I wanted to give some glamour to the portrait. Holmes hasn’t gotten lost in his own genius just yet.

So this is how I saw him in my mind, and I wanted to use a lot of purple in his clothing. The clothes aren’t very Victorian, but they’re not that modern either. The colors in the scarf are pretty wild, but I wanted the portrait have some vibrant colors too - to balance the great amount of shadows. Holmes’ hair is pretty modern, but it has a little twist of the ol’ times - and it is curly. And the monocle is a must in my SH-art - it already was in my previous RDJ / SH-fan art (here).

Max Riemelt

This portrait is of Max Riemelt in the movie “Before the Fall”. I haven’t actually seen the movie, but my friend told me about it and showed me some screen caps. I really liked this one photo of Max Riemelt and decided to paint him, using that photo as a reference. The “oldness” in the atmosphere really fascinated me. The blood running from his nose was added (it was not in the original photo). I wanted to make the painting more melancholy than the original photo, although the photo was pretty sad and dark too.

And new fan art from me after a long break, and it’s always a lot of fun to paint actors. My style has changed a little bit - it’s not as smooth and “digital” as it used to be. It’s more painting like now, which is good.

This is also my last art work in 2010. Happy New Year!

Robert Downey Jr / Sherlock Holmes

Not sure if this is more of a Robert Downey Jr or Sherlock Holmes fan art. Okay, I could say that RDJ is Sherlock Holmes, but that’s just my opinion. :’D

Anyway, I really enjoyed “Sherlock Holmes”. It had a huge influence on me, because of the fashion, settings, the era and the whole shebang. The actors were great, too. Especially RDJ and Jude Law, and their chemistry was awesome.

Anyway, I started this as a RDJ fan art, but then I transformed him into Sherlock Holmes. I added the monocle. He doesn’t have one in the movie but I think it would look good! Maybe he’s not fancy enough to wear one - he had those cool sunglasses though.

This was great to paint, from every aspect. I tried a different approach on this one; I didn’t make base colors or use lots of filters, I painted more like you would paint on real canvas. And actually that’s nicer than doing it more “digitally”, in a way. I’m not sure which part was the nicest to do. I didn’t even hate to paint anything in this one (except the stubble…)

Jude Law

Jude Law has such beautiful eyes, and I think he’s a very beautiful man overall. That’s why I wanted to paint him. But I didn’t realize how hairy he is! I was pretty much shocked when I realized it. And I left the chest hair undone in this one, because the stubble was enough body hair for me. I have a flu and I’m tired, so I got exhausted because of the amount of body hair! :’D

But the eyes were really worth it. And Jude Law is absolutely brilliant as Watson in “Sherlock Holmes”. He has such great chemistry with Robert Downey Jr, on and off screen. And this was painted in Ps, reference used.

Tom Hardy

I loved Inception as a movie, but Tom Hardy made it perfect. It was the first film I saw from him, and I fell in love with him as an actor! He’s just great. And I wanted to paint him, Inception-style. Only thing which I hated was the amount of facial hair he had. Facial hair looks nice, but when painting it… It’s a pain. :|

The nice part was that his face wasn’t thin in the movie. He was little bit on the muscular side, and I’ve usually painted thin people, so it was nice to try something different.

I think the background is pretty neat. It’s not a straight copy from the posters seen in the streets, but it has the spirit. And I’ve hardly ever used square brushes, but now I got the chance to. They’re handy.

Josh Hartnett

I’ve only seen one movie from Josh Hartnett, but I like his photos a lot. He always wears such great clothes and he’s very fashionable. I used a reference, but changed the tie because I hated the original green color. And the background is all disco-ish, yes!

And I think Hartnett has brown eyes actually, but I preferred green ones in this painting. Painted in Ps.
